A Study to Assess the Feeding Pattern of Infants Regarding Breast Feeding and To Determine the Effectiveness of Counselling Among Primi Para Mothers in Selected Hospitals at Puducherry

A quantitative study was carried out to assess the feeding pattern of infants regarding breast feeding and to determine the effectiveness of counseling among primi para mothers in selected hospitals, Puducherry. One group pre and post test design was used. 30 samples of primi para mothers of infants was selected by convenient sampling technique, Initially feeding pattern of infants was assessed by using the infant assessment form and the breastfeeding technique using Bristol Breastfeeding Assessment Tool. On the same day counseling was given on Breastfeeding. After 7days of counseling posttest was carried out with the same tool to assess the effectiveness of counseling. The data was analyzed using descriptive & inferential statistics.The present study findings showed that regarding the feeding pattern of infants, (23.33%) of mothers fed their infants within 1hour. Mean & Standard deviation was 7.56 & 0.57. The‘t’ test value was 5.36 which showed that the counseling was effective in improving the breastfeeding among primi para mothers at 0.05 level of significance. The study findings concludes that the counseling of primi para mothers regarding the technique of Breastfeeding will prevent against the danger signs in new born and also promotes the growth and development of the child.
