Antioxidative Activity of Ethanol Extracts of Lagerstroemia speciosa Leaves

Abstract

In order to develop naturally occurring antioxidants from edible plants, the antioxidative effect of hot Ethanol of Lagerstroemia speciosa leaves, known by the "Thomal name of Lagerstroemia speciosa in the Maharasthra, was studied. The content of tannin in Lagerstroemia speciosa extract was 36.8"ñ› in dry weight. Lagerstroemia speciosa extract showed strong anti- oxidative activity in a linoleic acid autoxidation system. Lagerstroemia speciosa extract was found to have a potent radical scavenging action on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydraz›l (DPPH) radicals and superoxide rad- icals (O 2 ‘) generated try a hypoxanthine (HPX)/xanthine oxidase (XOD) system. in virrc' lipid peroxidation of’ rat liver homogenate induced by Herr-butyl hydroperoxide (RHP) was inhibited by the addition of A«nni»i extract in a dose-dependent manner. From these results, Lagerstroemia speciosa extract u'as demonstrated to be useful as an anti- oxidant or free radical scavenger to protect biological systems against oxidative stress. and very effective antibiotic drug.
