License Plate Detection and Recognition System

Abstract

There is large number of vehicles in India as it is one of the most densely populated nation across the globe. Hence traffic management is necessary. Thus, in this paper we propose a system that serves the purpose of automatic car identification in traffic surveillance without human involvement. This project aims to introduce portable, low cost license plate detection system which will identify license plate with the standard as well as non-standard format. LPDR system consists of four stages like image acquisition, license plate localization, character segmentation, character recognition. We implement this system on Raspberry Pi board with OpenCV libraries. This system can be applicable for parking facilities, security purpose etc.
