“Biodiversity†is the variety of organisms, including their genetic diversity and the assemblage they form (Reid and Miller, 1989). During recent years, due to increased population and industrial growth, the quality of Ganga water deteriorated considerably. At places like Hardwar , thousands of pilgrims take bath daily in Ganga and degrade its water quality not only by bathing , but also by dumping the things like flowers, ash and bones of dead persons. These all human activities have not only affected adversely the quality of river water, but has also its biota or biodiversity. Ganga ecosystem is facing severe imbalances and the biodiversity of river appears declining. The Ganga water is utilized for a variety of purposes. So, it is important to study its nature and need for its conservation. Hence , the present study deals with biodiversity of River Ganga at Har ki Pauri, Hardwar. The present region of Hardwar lies between approximately between approximately latitude 29º58' North and longitude at 78º13’ East. Physico- chemical and biological parameters were observed in the first and third week of each month at study area. It was recorded that phytoplankton dominated over zooplankton. . It was recorded that plankton were maximum in winters and minimum in monsoon period, there is a direct interrelation between physico -chemical parameter sand biological parameters . The fluctuation of planktonic communities can be affected by the variation of the physico - chemical parameters .
